Medicare is a federal health insurance program mainly for people age 65 and older, as well as some younger individuals with certain disabilities or qualifying conditions.

Most people can enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period, which starts 3 months before the month they turn 65, includes their birthday month, and ends 3 months after.

Medicare has four parts:

  • Part A helps cover hospital stays
  • Part B helps cover doctor visits and outpatient care
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies
  • Part D helps cover prescription drugs

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B and lets you see providers nationwide who accept Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies and may include extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription coverage. em.

Original Medicare does not usually include most prescription drug coverage. You may need a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.

You may be able to delay certain parts of Medicare if you have qualifying employer coverage. It is important to review your situation carefully so you do not face penalties later.

The right plan depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, travel needs, and whether you want extra benefits. Comparing your options can help you choose coverage that fits your lifestyle.

Yes. There are certain enrollment periods each year when you may be able to change your Medicare coverage, depending on your situation.

A Medicare agent can help explain your options, compare plans, and guide you through enrollment so you can feel confident in your decision.

Turning 65 Soon?

Your Medicare Checklist Made Simple

Getting close to 65 is a big milestone, and Medicare is one of the most important decisions that comes with it. The good news is you do not have to figure it out alone. With the right guidance, you can understand your options, avoid costly mistakes, and choose coverage that fits your needs.

What You Should Do Before You Turn 65

Know your enrollment window

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. Missing this window may lead to penalties or delayed coverage.

Decide whether you need to enroll

If you are retiring or do not have qualified employer coverage, you may need to enroll when you become eligible. If you are still working, your next steps may depend on the insurance you already have.

Understand the parts of Medicare

Knowing the basics makes everything easier:

  • Part A – Hospital coverage
  • Part B – Medical coverage
  • Part C – Medicare Advantage
  • Part D – Prescription drug coverage

Make a list of your doctors and prescriptions

Before choosing a plan, write down your:

  • doctors and specialists
  • medications
  • preferred pharmacy

This makes it easier to compare plans and avoid surprises

Think about the coverage that matters most

Everyone’s needs are different. You may want:

  • lower monthly premiums
  • predictable out-of-pocket costs
  • prescription coverage
  • dental, vision, and hearing benefits
  • access to specific doctors
  • extra benefits included in certain plans

Compare your Medicare options

Some people prefer Original Medicare with a Supplement, while others like the simplicity of a Medicare Advantage plan. The right choice depends on your health needs, budget, and lifestyle.

Keep your important documents ready

Have these nearby when it is time to review your options:

  • Medicare card if received
  • Social Security information
  • current insurance card
  • prescription list
  • doctor list

Talk with a licensed Medicare agent

A licensed Medicare agent can help you compare plans, review benefits, check doctor networks, and make sure you feel confident before enrolling.
